TMD is a disorder that can cause painful irritation to the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) which connect your lower jaw to the upper jaw. Left untreated, TMD, also known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, can cause crippling pain that can make chewing, talking and even opening your mouth difficult. TMD can be caused from a variety of reasons including grinding your teeth, poor teeth alignment and stress.
Common TMJ symptoms include:
- Popping or crackling noises from your jaw
- Trouble opening your jaw
- Painful irritation around your jaw, mouth, or ears
- Difficulty chewing
If you believe you may be suffering from TMD, call Rohrer Center Orthodontics to make an appointment and discuss your TMJ/TMD treatment options. We provide a thorough exam that can help pinpoint the cause of your discomfort. A TMJ exam includes checking the condition of the mouth and jaw, tenderness in the muscles, and unusual popping sounds. Your discomfort may stem from several reasons such as swelling or damaged tissue in the joint. Once a diagnosis has been made, you can begin TMD treatment to relieve the pain.
TMJ treatment will vary between patients, and we will talk you through each of your options. Common pain relievers and ice packs can relieve temporary TMJ pain. Only in extreme cases will we recommend invasive procedures. For more intense, long-lasting pain, we may recommend using a nightguard, retainer, or other mouthpieces to reduce grinding or correct misaligned teeth to readjust the pressure on the jaw and joints.
